Apple TV is airing its most ambitious iPhone production yet – a live MLS match between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC captured entirely on iPhone 17 Pro. Kick-off is at 7:30pm PT on May 23. If you’re reading this after the fact, rest assured the highlights will be available on Apple TV afterwards. Subscribers in over 100 countries can watch with no blackouts, and new subscribers get a one-week free trial.
It’s a natural next step for a company that has been steadily expanding its sports footprint – from the Apple Sports app for tracking scores and leagues, to its growing library of live MLS and MLB coverage on Apple TV. Apple has also had a long history of Shot on iPhone projects, even some with a sporting angle – like its series of short soccer films to coincide with the 2018 World Cup. But this is the first time iPhone has captured a major live match in its entirety.
iPhone 17 Pro’s three 48MP cameras will cover everything from warmups to in-net goal angles, with Apple Log 2 footage throughout. The company promises this won’t just be a technical feat, but one that changes the coverage with “dynamic new perspectives that bring viewers closer to the action, made possible by the small form factor of iPhone.” We doubt this will be the last time iPhones are used for a high-profile match like this.
